FBR Document Checklist — Foreign Birth Registration
A complete checklist of documents required for a Foreign Birth Registration (FBR) application. FBR is the process of registering your birth in Ireland's Foreign Births Register so you can apply for an Irish passport.
Your Documents (Applicant)
- Civil Birth Certificate — Original long-form (vault) certificate showing both parents' names.
- Civil Marriage Certificate — Original; required if you are married (regardless of name change).
- Certified Photo ID — Colour copy of your passport or driver's licence, signed and certified by a witness.
- Proofs of Address (×2) — Original utility bills, bank statements, or government letters.
- Photographs (×4) — Two must be signed and dated on the back by your witness.
- Application Form — Printed and signed in the presence of your witness.
Parent's Documents (Person D — claiming through Irish-born parent)
- Civil Birth Certificate — Original long-form showing grandparents' names.
- Civil Marriage Certificate — Original; required to show name change or link to you.
- ID or Death Certificate — Certified copy of current ID (if living) or original death certificate (if deceased).
Grandparent's Documents (Person E — claiming through Irish-born grandparent)
- Civil Birth Certificate — Original long-form Irish birth certificate for your grandparent.
- Civil Marriage Certificate — Original; required if your grandparent married.
- Death Certificate — Original death certificate if your grandparent is deceased.
Important Notes
- All documents must be originals, not photocopies, unless specifically stated as certified copies.
- Non-English documents must be accompanied by a certified translation.
- The FBR office cannot validate whether documents are correct — they can only confirm receipt.
- Applications are processed in strict order by date received.
